Smältförfarande

Smältförfarande, also known as smelting, is a process used to extract a metal from its ore. The process involves heating the ore to a high temperature in the presence of a reducing agent, such as carbon, to convert the metal oxide into a pure metal. The reducing agent reacts with the oxygen in the ore, releasing it as a gas and leaving behind the pure metal.

The smelting process typically occurs in a furnace, where the ore is heated to temperatures ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 degrees Celsius. The choice of furnace depends on the type of ore and the desired metal. For example, blast furnaces are used for smelting iron ore, while reverberatory furnaces are used for smelting copper and lead ores.

During the smelting process, impurities in the ore are also removed. These impurities can include other metals, silica, and sulfur. The impurities are often separated from the molten metal and collected as slag, which can be used as a building material or in other industrial applications.
