Smälssäkringar

Smälssäkringar, often translated as "fuse" in English, are a type of electrical safety device designed to protect electrical circuits from overcurrents. They contain a metal wire or filament that is specifically designed to melt and break when the current flowing through it exceeds a predetermined safe level. This melting action interrupts the flow of electricity, thereby preventing damage to the equipment connected to the circuit, and also mitigating the risk of fire.

The operation of a smälssäkring is based on the principle of Joule heating. When electric current flows through a conductor, it generates heat. The amount of heat generated is proportional to the square of the current and the resistance of the conductor. Smälssäkringar are constructed with a filament of a material with a low melting point and a precise resistance. If a fault occurs, such as a short circuit or an overload, the current increases significantly. This increased current causes the filament to heat up rapidly until it melts, breaking the circuit.

Smälssäkringar are characterized by their rated current, which is the maximum current the fuse can carry continuously without blowing, and their breaking capacity, which is the maximum fault current the fuse can safely interrupt. They come in various shapes and sizes, adapted for different applications, from small electronic devices to large industrial power systems. Once a smälssäkring blows, it must be replaced with a new one of the same rating to restore power to the circuit.
