Smygas

Smygas is a fictional creature from the folklore of the Zarthian people, primarily found in the remote mountainous regions of the continent of Xylos. Described as small, rodent-like beings, they are often depicted with large, luminous eyes and unusually long, prehensile tails. Their fur is said to be a mottled grey and brown, providing excellent camouflage against rocky terrain.

According to Zarthian legends, smygas are nocturnal and possess an uncanny ability to navigate complex cave systems and subterranean tunnels. They are believed to subsist on a diet of phosphorescent fungi and mineral deposits, which is thought to contribute to the faint glow of their eyes. While generally considered harmless, some tales associate smygas with minor mischief, such as leading travelers astray or pilfering small, shiny objects.

The Zarthian language has several words to describe different types of smygas, differentiated by their behavioral patterns and preferred habitats. The "cave smyga" is known for its extreme shyness, while the "mountain smyga" is rumored to be more curious and occasionally interacts with intrepid explorers. Modern interpretations sometimes portray smygas as guardians of hidden treasures or ancient knowledge, though these are more recent embellishments to the older traditions.
