Smartkortit

Smartkortit, also known as smart cards, are portable electronic devices with embedded microprocessors that can store and process data. They typically resemble a credit card in size and shape, but contain a microchip that allows for more sophisticated functionality than traditional magnetic stripe cards.

The primary purpose of a smart card is to provide enhanced security and data storage capabilities. The embedded chip can store personal information, account details, encryption keys, and digital certificates. This makes them suitable for a wide range of applications, including secure identification, payment systems, and access control.

Smart cards communicate with a reader device, which can be a dedicated terminal or a computer with a smart card slot. Data is transferred between the card and the reader through direct physical contact or, in the case of contactless smart cards, via radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. Contactless smart cards offer faster transaction times and increased convenience.

Common uses for smart cards include credit and debit cards, SIM cards for mobile phones, transit passes, loyalty cards, and secure access badges for buildings or computer systems. The microprocessor within the card allows for complex operations, such as performing cryptographic calculations, which enhances the security of transactions and data. The information stored on a smart card is generally more difficult to counterfeit or tamper with compared to older technologies like magnetic stripes.
