Smallpipes

Smallpipes is a term used to describe a family of bagpipes that are smaller and generally quieter than the Great Highland Bagpipe. They are associated with Scottish and English folk music and encompass several regional varieties, including Scottish smallpipes (also called lowland smallpipes) and Border pipes. The term is sometimes used to refer to any small-size bagpipe, but in practice it denotes sets designed for indoor playing or lighter music.

Construction: A smallpipes set typically consists of a bag, a chanter, and one or more drones. The chanter is shorter and usually plays a diatonic scale in a limited range. Air is supplied via a bellows or by mouth, depending on the instrument, with the bag kept under the arm. Drones are often single or double; some instruments have additional keys or different tunings.

Playing style and repertoire: The tone is softer and more intimate than the Great Highland Bagpipe, suitable for solo practice and small ensembles. Repertoire includes traditional Scottish tunes, folk pieces, and contemporary arrangements; smallpipes are also used in historical or early music contexts.

History and makers: Smallpipes have roots in Scotland and northern England, developing in the 18th and 19th centuries as a more portable, indoor-friendly alternative to larger pipes. In the modern era, makers and players have revived and expanded their use, with various regional designs and modern keyed chanters.
