Slysabætur, literally “accident benefits” in Icelandic, refers to a category of financial payments designed to compensate individuals for losses resulting from accidents. The term is used in Nordic welfare states to describe benefits that support income replacement, medical costs, rehabilitation, and daily living when an accident temporarily or permanently reduces a person’s ability to work or perform ordinary tasks.

Typical components include: temporary sickness benefits that replace part of lost income during recovery; permanent disability pensions when an injury leads to long-term reduction in earning capacity; coverage of medical treatment, rehabilitation, and assistive devices not fully paid by other schemes; travel costs to medical appointments; and, in some programs, home care allowances or funeral expenses for dependents in certain cases.

Eligibility usually requires residence or insured status, a verifiable accident, and medical documentation. Applicants submit to the appropriate social insurance or workers’ compensation authority, providing medical reports, income records, and accident documentation.
