Slunení

Slunení is a Czech term referring to the action of exposing something to sunlight. The word derives from slunce, meaning sun, and the suffix -ení, which marks an action or process. It is used to describe several related practices united by solar exposure as the primary means of processing, preserving, or altering a material.

In food processing, slunění commonly denotes sun-drying or solar drying. This traditional method reduces moisture in fruits, vegetables, fish, and herbs, leveraging natural heat and air movement. While it is inexpensive and energy-efficient, it can be slow and may lead to uneven drying or contamination if environmental conditions are poor or if hygiene is not maintained.

In agriculture, the term encompasses exposure of soil to solar heat, sometimes referred to as soil solarization. This practice raises soil temperatures sufficiently to suppress certain soil-borne pests and pathogens, often aided by coverings that trap heat.

Slunění also applies to the weathering and aging of materials left in sunlight, which can cause color changes, drying, and alterations in mechanical properties. In health and cosmetics, sun exposure is associated with tanning and vitamin D synthesis, but excessive slunění carries risks of skin damage and cancer.
