Sloanea

Sloanea is a genus of flowering plants in the family Elaeocarpaceae. The genus comprises about 150 species of trees and shrubs, found in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Sloanea species are characterized by their alternate, simple leaves, and their flowers, which are typically solitary or in small clusters. The flowers are usually bisexual, with five petals and numerous stamens. The fruit is a capsule, which splits open to reveal seeds surrounded by a fleshy aril.

Species of Sloanea are ecologically important in their native habitats, providing food and shelter for a variety of wildlife. Some species are also used for timber, with the wood being hard and durable. Sloanea wood is often used for construction, furniture, and other applications. A few species are cultivated for their ornamental value, particularly for their attractive flowers and fruits. The genus Sloanea was first described by Carl Linnaeus the Younger in 1782. The name Sloanea honors the English botanist Sir Hans Sloane.
