Skyddsgown

Skyddsgown, or protective gown, is a garment worn to protect the wearer’s skin and clothing from contamination in medical, laboratory, or industrial settings. It is designed to cover the torso and arms and is fastened at the back or front.

Gowns come in disposable and reusable forms. Disposable gowns are typically made of nonwoven materials such as polypropylene or SMS and may be fluid-impervious or fluid-repellent. Reusable gowns are usually fabric-based, made of cotton or polyester blends, and are laundered after use. Design variations include open-back and closed-back models, full-length or knee-length versions, and sleeves with elastic cuffs or knit cuffs. Fastening methods include ties, Velcro, or snap closures.

Common uses include patient care, surgical or diagnostic procedures, laboratory work, and cleanroom or industrial tasks that involve splash or chemical exposure. Gowns provide a barrier against biological agents, fluids, and contaminants, and may be rated for barrier performance under standards such as ANSI/AAMI PB70 in the United States or EN 13795 in Europe. Some gowns are sterile and used for surgical procedures; others are non-sterile for general isolation use.

Care and lifecycle: Disposable gowns are discarded after single use, while reusable gowns require laundering and, if necessary, disinfection and ironing. The development of protective gowns has evolved from fabric-based garments to disposable nonwoven designs to balance protection, comfort, and supply in healthcare and industry.
