SkyActivD

SkyActiv-D is Mazda's line of clean diesel engines within the SkyActiv technology family. These four-cylinder, turbocharged direct-injected diesels are designed to deliver strong low-end torque and fuel efficiency while reducing emissions compared with earlier diesel designs.

A key feature is its relatively low compression ratio for a diesel engine, around 14:1 in early versions, which Mazda says helps control NOx and allows tighter fuel metering. The engines employ advanced fuel injection, refined combustion strategies, and turbocharging to optimize efficiency and performance.

Emissions control and exhaust aftertreatment form a core part of SkyActiv-D. The powertrains use diesel particulate filters and oxidation catalysts, with selective catalytic reduction systems (often using urea-based AdBlue) in many markets to meet Euro 5/6 emissions standards. Exhaust gas recirculation and other intake-air management techniques further reduce emissions while preserving drivability.

The SkyActiv-D engines were introduced in the early 2010s and were offered in various Mazda models worldwide, including the CX-5 and Mazda6 in multiple regions. Adoption varied by market due to emissions regulations and certification. The line has been updated over time to improve efficiency and comply with evolving standards.

In the broader Mazda lineup, SkyActiv-D is paired with SkyActiv-G gasoline engines, SkyActiv-Drive or SkyActiv-MT transmissions, and other efficiency technologies as part of the company's strategy to improve overall efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.
