Skottning

Skottning is the act of removing snow and ice from surfaces, primarily to restore safety and accessibility after snowfall. In Sweden and other Nordic countries, skottning covers both public snow clearance conducted by authorities and private snow removal performed by property owners or tenants. The scope includes streets and sidewalks, driveways and entrances, and, in residential and commercial buildings, roofs when necessary to prevent damage or leaks.

Common methods include manual shoveling with a snow shovel, pushing snow with a snow plow, or using a snow blower for larger areas. For roads and large spaces, municipalities deploy plows and graders and apply de-icing agents. Roof skottning is performed to reduce snow loads and prevent ice dams; it is often done by specialized workers using safety equipment.

Responsibilities for clearing public and private surfaces vary by country and locality. Municipal rules typically designate priorities and timeframes for clearing streets and sidewalks; private owners may be obligated to keep the sidewalk in front of their property passable. The work carries risks, such as back injuries from lifting, slips and falls, and exposure to cold. Use of protective clothing, proper lifting techniques, and caution around traffic is advised. The use of salt and other de-icing agents helps with traction but may have environmental impacts.

Skottning is a routine aspect of winter maintenance in regions with regular snowfall and is often coordinated with weather forecasts and snow removal plans.
