Skjálftamælingar

Skjálftamælingar, or seismological measurements, refer to the practice of detecting, recording, and analyzing seismic waves generated by earthquakes and other Earth movements. These measurements are crucial for understanding the Earth's internal structure, the processes that cause earthquakes, and for assessing seismic hazard.

The primary instruments used in skjálftamælingar are seismometers and seismographs. A seismometer is a sensor that detects ground motion, while a seismograph is a device that records this motion, typically as a seismogram. Modern seismometers are highly sensitive and can detect even very small vibrations. Seismographs produce a visual or digital record of the seismic waves, showing their amplitude, frequency, and arrival times.
