Skeletavöðvum, also known as skeletal muscle, is a type of muscle tissue that is attached to bones and other structures within the body. It is responsible for voluntary movements, such as walking, running, and lifting objects. Skeletal muscles are composed of long, cylindrical cells called muscle fibers, which are surrounded by a connective tissue sheath called the endomysium. These fibers are further bundled together to form fascicles, which are then surrounded by the perimysium. The entire muscle is enclosed by the epimysium.

Skeletal muscles are innervated by motor neurons, which transmit electrical signals from the brain or spinal cord to the muscle fibers. These signals cause the muscle fibers to contract, resulting in movement. The contraction of skeletal muscles is a result of the sliding of actin and myosin filaments within the muscle fibers.

Skeletal muscles play a crucial role in various physiological processes. They are involved in maintaining posture, generating heat, and storing and releasing energy. They also play a significant role in the body's immune response, as they can produce certain cytokines and chemokines.

Skeletal muscles can be classified into two main types based on their structure and function: striated muscles and smooth muscles. Striated muscles, which include skeletal muscles, have a striated appearance due to the alternating light and dark bands of actin and myosin filaments. Smooth muscles, on the other hand, have a non-striated appearance and are found in the walls of organs such as the intestines and blood vessels.

Skeletal muscles are essential for maintaining the body's overall health and well-being. They are involved in almost every aspect of daily life, from simple tasks such as eating and drinking to more complex activities such as sports and work.
