Skanda, also known as Kartikeya, Murugan, or Subrahmanya, is a prominent deity in Hinduism, particularly revered in South India. He is widely regarded as the god of war, the commander of the celestial armies, and the patron of soldiers and warriors. Skanda is often depicted as a youthful and handsome god, typically riding a peacock. His iconography frequently includes multiple faces and arms, symbolizing his diverse powers and abilities.

The birth of Skanda is a significant myth within Hindu tradition. It is believed that he was born out of the divine seed of Lord Shiva, which was transferred to the womb of Ganga (the river goddess) and then entrusted to the Krittikas, a group of six celestial nymphs. This miraculous birth was orchestrated to defeat the formidable demon Taraka, who had gained immense power and was troubling the gods. Skanda, with his divine might, successfully vanquished Taraka and restored peace to the cosmos.

Skanda is associated with various divine weapons, the most famous being the Vel, a divine spear. He is worshipped for strength, courage, wisdom, and protection against evil. His devotees often undertake pilgraches to his numerous temples, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where he is a central figure in religious festivals like Thaipusam and Skanda Sashti. His worship is characterized by devotional songs, elaborate rituals, and penances.
