Horizontal scaling, or scaling out, involves adding more instances of existing components to distribute the workload. This could mean adding more servers to a cluster or more database replicas. Horizontal scaling offers greater flexibility and potential for almost unlimited capacity, but it often requires more complex architectural design, including load balancing and data synchronization mechanisms. The choice of scaling path depends heavily on the specific requirements, budget, and technical constraints of the system. Understanding these paths is crucial for designing systems that can adapt to future growth and maintain performance under increasing load.
