Skadarlija

Skadarlija is a historic street and bohemian district in Belgrade, Serbia. It is located in the municipality of Stari Grad in the city’s old town center, centered on Skadarska Street, a cobblestone lane lined with traditional townhouses and a cluster of kafanas, or taverns, that offer live folk music and meals.

The neighborhood dates largely to the 19th century and developed as a gathering place for artists, writers, musicians, and traders. In the late 1800s and early 1900s Skadarlija earned a reputation as Belgrade’s bohemian quarter, preserving an intimate, nostalgic atmosphere even as the city modernized.

Today Skadarlija remains a popular destination for both locals and visitors. The street and surrounding alleys retain much of their historic character, with wooden facades, wrought-iron balconies, and signage that evoke traditional Belgrade. Visitors come to dine in kafanas, stroll the cobbles, and hear traditional music, especially in the evenings. The district is also a common stop on walking tours and is often described as a cultural and historical emblem of Belgrade.
