Sjøfraktbrev, often translated as a sea waybill or ocean bill of lading, is a document issued by a carrier to a shipper, acknowledging receipt of cargo for shipment by sea. It serves as evidence of the contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier, detailing the terms and conditions under which the goods are transported. Unlike a negotiable bill of lading, a sea waybill is typically not a document of title and is therefore not transferable by endorsement.

The primary purpose of a sea waybill is to facilitate the smooth and efficient release of cargo at the destination. Since it is non-negotiable, the cargo can be delivered to the named consignee upon presentation of identification, without requiring the surrender of the original document. This simplifies customs clearance and reduces the risk of delays associated with lost or misplaced negotiable documents.

Key information typically found on a sea waybill includes the names and addresses of the shipper and consignee, the port of loading and port of discharge, a description of the goods (including quantity, weight, and type of packaging), and the vessel's name. It also outlines the freight charges and payment terms. While it acts as a receipt for the goods, it does not confer ownership rights in the same way a negotiable bill of lading does, making it more suitable for transactions where payment is made in advance or where trust between parties is well-established.
