Siviilioikeudenkäynnit, or civil proceedings, are legal actions brought before a court of law to resolve disputes between private parties. These parties can include individuals, corporations, or other legal entities. Unlike criminal proceedings, which are initiated by the state to punish an offense against society, civil litigation focuses on redressing private wrongs or enforcing private rights.

The primary goal of a civil lawsuit is typically to obtain a remedy, such as monetary damages to compensate for losses, or an injunction to compel or prevent a specific action. Common types of civil cases include contract disputes, personal injury claims, property disputes, family law matters like divorce and child custody, and employment disagreements.

The process generally begins with one party, the plaintiff, filing a complaint or petition with the court, outlining their claims against the other party, the defendant. The defendant is then served with the complaint and has an opportunity to respond. Following this initial stage, the parties may engage in discovery, a phase where they exchange information and evidence relevant to the case.

If a settlement is not reached, the case may proceed to trial. During a trial, both sides present their evidence and arguments to a judge or jury. The judge or jury then makes a decision based on the law and the presented facts. Appeals can be filed if a party believes there was a legal error during the trial. Civil proceedings aim to provide a structured and fair method for resolving private disputes.
