Sisäänhengittävää refers to the phase of breathing where air is drawn into the lungs. This process is essential for life, as it allows the body to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. The act of inhalation involves a coordinated effort of several muscles, primarily the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles.

When one inhales, the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the chest cavity, contracts and flattens. Simultaneously, the external intercostal muscles between the ribs contract, lifting the rib cage upwards and outwards. These actions increase the volume of the thoracic cavity, creating a lower pressure inside the lungs compared to the external atmospheric pressure. As a result, air flows into the lungs to equalize this pressure difference.

The rate and depth of inhalation can vary significantly depending on the body's needs. During rest, breathing is typically shallow and slow. However, during physical exertion or when experiencing stress, the body requires more oxygen, leading to deeper and more rapid inhalations. The nervous system plays a crucial role in regulating breathing patterns, with the brainstem controlling the automatic rhythm of inhalation and exhalation. Factors such as oxygen levels in the blood, carbon dioxide levels, and physical activity all influence the signals sent to the respiratory muscles.
