Sisämaalit

Sisämaalit are paints designed for use on interior surfaces such as walls, ceilings, woodwork and metalwork inside buildings. They provide color, a protective film and various finishing properties that affect appearance, durability and washability in living spaces.

There are several main types of sisämaalit. Water-based paints, including acrylic and acrylic-alkyd emulsions, are common due to low odor, easy cleanup with water and reduced yellowing. Oil-based (alkyd) paints offer strong build and durability but have higher odor and longer drying times. Finishes range from matta (flat) and eggshell to puolikiiltävä (semi-gloss) and kiiltävä (gloss). Special finishes offer increased washability, moisture resistance or antimicrobial properties for kitchens, bathrooms or hallways.

Key components are pigments for color and opacity, binders that form the film, solvents or water for application, and additives that improve properties such as leveling, adhesion or mildew resistance. Modern sisämaalit often emphasize low VOC content to minimize indoor emissions and improve air quality, while maintaining durability and cleanability.

Application and preparation practices are important for good results. Surfaces should be cleaned, repaired and smoothened; troublesome stains may require a primer. Primers improve adhesion and seal porous substrates. Paint is applied with roller, brush or spray, with drying times varying by product and room conditions. Typical coverage is approximately 8–12 square meters per liter, depending on porosity and finish. Re-coating times depend on the product and environmental conditions.

Choosing a sisämaalit involves considering the room’s use, lighting, desired finish and cleanability, as well as health and environmental preferences such as low VOC options. Proper storage and ventilation during and after painting are recommended to minimize odors and emissions.
