Sipareigojim

Sipareigojim, commonly written as įsipareigojimas in Lithuanian, is the concept of an obligation or commitment. It refers to duties that individuals or organizations are obliged to fulfill, arising from contracts, laws, or explicit promises. Obligations can be legally enforceable or morally binding.

Sources of įsipareigojimas include formal contracts specifying duties and payment terms; statutory duties imposed by law; and undertakings arising from quasi-contracts, family, or social expectations. In civil-law contexts, an obligation creates a relationship by which one party owes a performance to another.

Enforcement and remedies: Breach of an obligation can lead to remedies such as monetary damages, restitution, or other court-ordered measures. An obligation ends when the obligation is fulfilled, when it is discharged by mutual agreement, or when it is extinguished by other recognized means.

Etymology and usage: The term derives from pareiga (duty) with the prefix į- and suffix -imas; standard orthography uses diacritics. In texts without diacritics, it may appear as sipareigojimas or sipareigojim.

Cultural and practical note: In Lithuania and in many legal systems, keeping commitments is valued; clearly defining obligations helps prevent disputes and supports commerce and social trust.
