Sinusiitti

Sinusiitti, also known as a sinus infection, is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally, sinuses are filled with air, but when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection.

The most common symptoms of sinusiitti include nasal congestion, thick nasal discharge, pain and pressure in the face, headache, and a reduced sense of smell. Other symptoms can involve coughing, sore throat, fever, and fatigue. The pain may worsen when bending over or lying down.

Sinusiitti can be caused by viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. Viral infections are the most frequent cause, often developing after a common cold. Bacterial infections can sometimes follow viral ones. Fungal infections are less common but can occur, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. Factors that increase the risk of developing sinusiitti include allergies, nasal polyps, a deviated septum, and respiratory infections.

Treatment for sinusiitti depends on the cause and severity. For viral sinusitis, which usually resolves on its own, rest and over-the-counter pain relievers may be sufficient. Saline nasal sprays and decongestants can also help relieve symptoms. If a bacterial infection is suspected, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics. Antifungal medications are used for fungal sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis, which lasts for 12 weeks or longer, may require different treatment approaches, sometimes including nasal corticosteroids or surgery.
