Simferopol

Simferopol is a city on the Crimean Peninsula that serves as the administrative center of the Republic of Crimea and is one of the peninsula’s largest urban centers. It lies in central Crimea, on the banks of the Salgir River, inland from the Black Sea coast.

Founded in 1784 after the Russian Empire’s annexation of Crimea, Simferopol grew as an administrative and commercial hub. It was the capital of the Taurida Governorate in the Russian Empire and later the capital of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Ukrainian SSR. In 1954, Crimea was transferred from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR, making Simferopol the seat of Crimean regional government. Following the 2014 crisis, the city has been administered by Russian authorities as part of the Republic of Crimea, a status not recognized by most countries.
