Silmas

Silmas is a coastal city and port in the western part of Veridia. It serves as the administrative capital of Silmas Prefecture and is a regional hub for maritime trade, logistics, and services, anchored by a sheltered harbor that supports both fishing fleets and cargo traffic.

Origins trace to a medieval fishing hamlet that grew into a trading town after access to regional sea lanes and river routes facilitated commerce. The city expanded in the 19th and early 20th centuries with rail links and shipyards, while its harbor remained central to its identity.

The climate is temperate maritime, with mild winters and cool summers. The coastline features a mix of rocky shores and sheltered bays, and the urban core lies near the water with newer districts to the east.

The port handles general cargo, fishing, and passenger services. Key sectors include shipbuilding and repair, logistics, and light manufacturing, complemented by a growing services sector focused on education, tourism, and healthcare.

Silmas is governed by a mayor and city council elected for four-year terms. It participates in the national federation through a regional prefecture and maintains autonomous powers over urban planning, culture, and local services.

The city has about 110,000 residents, with diverse communities and languages represented in daily life. Local culture centers on maritime heritage, with annual tides and markets that reflect its fisher and trading roots.

Notable sites include Silmas Cathedral, the Old Harbor, and Market Gate. The city hosts Silmas University, a public research university offering programs in engineering, humanities, and the sciences.
