Sileälaakereita

Sileälaakereita, often translated as plain bearings or bushings, are the simplest form of bearing. They consist of a single, usually cylindrical, surface that allows relative motion between two parts. Unlike rolling-element bearings that use balls or rollers to reduce friction, plain bearings rely on sliding friction between two surfaces. This sliding motion can occur in various directions, including rotational, linear, and oscillatory.

The primary function of a plain bearing is to guide and support a moving part, reduce friction, and minimize wear. They are commonly made from materials like bronze, brass, plastics, or composite materials, chosen for their low coefficient of friction, wear resistance, and ability to withstand the operating loads and temperatures. Lubrication is crucial for the efficient operation and longevity of plain bearings. This can be achieved through oils, greases, or even dry lubrication using materials with inherent low friction properties.

Plain bearings are widely used in numerous applications due to their simplicity, low cost, and ability to handle shock loads and contaminated environments. Examples include automotive suspension components, hinges, pumps, electric motors, and various industrial machinery. Their compact design and ability to operate without lubrication in some cases make them a versatile choice for many engineering challenges. While they generally have a higher coefficient of friction than rolling-element bearings, their robustness and cost-effectiveness often make them the preferred solution.
