Siledust

Siledust is a term used for fine particles derived from silicon-containing minerals, most commonly crystalline silica. It is generated during industrial processing of silica-rich materials, including cutting, grinding, drilling, milling, and blasting. Siledust covers a spectrum of particle sizes, from submicron to tens of micrometers, with a fraction small enough to be inhaled deeply into the lungs.

Composition and forms vary with the source material. The spectrum typically includes crystalline silica polymorphs such as quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite, along with amorphous silica and other silicates such as feldspars or clays. In many environments siledust is an impure mix rather than a pure substance.

Applications and occurrence: In industry, siledust occurs as an occupational exposure hazard in mining, construction, glassmaking, ceramics, and metalworking. It may also be processed for use as filler, polishing agents, or as a component in certain composites, depending on particle size and chemistry.

Health effects: Prolonged inhalation of respirable crystalline silica is linked to silicosis, a progressive and incurable lung disease, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. The hazard is influenced by particle size, shape, surface properties, and exposure duration.

Control and regulation: Exposure is mitigated through dust suppression, wet methods, enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, respiratory protection, and good housekeeping. Occupational exposure limits exist in many jurisdictions; workers should be monitored, and employers should implement exposure controls and medical surveillance where required.
