Sijaliitteet

Sijaliitteet are words or phrases that indicate the location, direction, or time of something in the Finnish language. They are often attached to the end of a noun or pronoun, forming a compound word. Common examples of sijaliitteet include suffixes like -ssa/-ssä (in, on), -lla/-llä (on, at), -sta/-stä (from, out of), -hän/-hän (towards), and -lle (to, for). The specific form of the sijaliite depends on vowel harmony and consonant gradation rules of the Finnish language, which are dictated by the preceding sounds in the word it attaches to.

For instance, the noun 'talo' (house) can be modified to indicate location: 'talossa' means "in the house." Similarly, 'katu' (street) becomes 'kadulla' meaning "on the street." Time can also be expressed using sijaliitteet, as in 'maanantaina' meaning "on Monday."
