Origin and usage: The term was coined by author A. N. Verin in 2012 in the novella The River Names, where the Sihtu people practice sihitult as a cyclical ceremony. The word is presented as belonging to the Sihtu language within the story’s world; it has no attested basis in real-world languages.

Mechanics: Sihitult combines performances, such as traveling storytelling and mnemonic gatherings, with the marking of landscapes—rivers, hills, borders—by named events. Stories are linked to specific places and times, enabling participants to reconstruct genealogies, laws, and ecological knowledge by reciting routes and place-names. Elders transmit knowledge to youths through ritual walks, memory games, and guided recitations. The practice reinforces social roles, territorial cohesion, and communal memory.
