Signalkuppe

Signalkuppe is a prominent summit in the Valais Alps of Switzerland, reaching an elevation of 3,711 meters (12,175 feet). It is located on the border between Italy and Switzerland, forming part of the impressive ridge that includes the Matterhorn. The summit is particularly noteworthy for its distinctive peak, which is often described as needle-like.

The most common route to Signalkuppe's summit begins from the Matterhorn. Climbers typically ascend the Liongrat ridge of the Matterhorn and then traverse a snow ridge to reach Signalkuppe. This route presents significant challenges, requiring advanced mountaineering skills, including ice climbing and snow traversing. The summit itself offers a panoramic view of the surrounding Alps, including the Monte Rosa massif and the Bernese Alps.

Signalkuppe is also home to the Margherita Hut, which is the highest mountain hut in Europe, situated at 4,554 meters (14,941 feet) on the neighboring Signalkuppe summit. While the Margherita Hut is technically on a higher point, the term "Signalkuppe" is often used to refer to the general area and the climbing objectives within it. The hut provides essential accommodation and sustenance for climbers undertaking ascents in the region, making it a vital resource for mountaineering activities in the Monte Rosa massif.
