The term originates from the Greek letter sigma (Σ), which resembles the shape of the transaction fee structure in blockchain networks like Bitcoin. This method gained popularity as a way to support developers, miners, or other entities while maintaining a low financial commitment.

The process involves sending a transaction with a predetermined fee, often as small as a few satoshis (the smallest unit of Bitcoin), to a predefined address. The recipient then returns a fixed amount, such as 100 satoshis, regardless of the original fee sent. This creates a predictable and low-cost way to contribute to blockchain-related projects or individuals.
