Sienieläinryhmät, or fungal animal groups, is a term that refers to the diverse ways fungi interact with and form relationships with animal life. These interactions can range from mutualistic symbiosis, where both organisms benefit, to parasitic relationships where one organism harms the other. Many fungi are decomposers, playing a crucial role in ecosystems by breaking down dead organic matter, which indirectly benefits animals by recycling nutrients.

Some fungi form direct partnerships with animals. For example, leaf-cutter ants cultivate specific species of fungi within their nests, feeding them with leaves and in return consuming the fungi as their primary food source. This is a classic example of mutualism. Another significant interaction is seen in mycorrhizal fungi, which form symbiotic associations with plant roots. While not directly with animals, these fungi enhance plant growth, which in turn supports herbivorous animals.

Parasitic fungi also have a profound impact on animal populations. Examples include pathogenic fungi that infect insects, controlling their populations, or fungi that cause diseases in vertebrates. Cordyceps fungi are well-known for their ability to infect and control insects, manipulating their behavior before eventually killing them to reproduce. These relationships highlight the complex and often vital roles fungi play in the animal kingdom and the broader environment. The study of these fungal-animal associations is an important area of ecological research.
