Shifted

Shifted is the past participle of shift, used as an adjective or verb form. It describes something moved from its original position or altered away from its initial state. In computing and mathematics, the term is common in contexts involving translation or reorganization of data, functions, or symbols.

In mathematics, a shift means translating a function along an axis; the shifted function is written as f(x−a). Time shifts and phase shifts in physics and signal processing are specific cases where a signal is delayed or advanced by a constant.

In statistics and probability, a shifted distribution indicates a location parameter added to a variable: X = Y + c. Common examples include shifted exponential or shifted normal distributions, which preserve shape but move along the axis.

In computing, bitwise shifts (left and right) move bits within binary representations. A left shift by n positions multiplies by 2^n (ignoring overflow); a right shift divides by 2^n. Arithmetic right shifts preserve the sign bit in signed integers.

In data analysis and time-series work, shifts align signals for comparison; cross-correlation, convolution, and filtering often involve changing the time or space origin. In spectroscopy, chemical shifts reflect the resonance frequency relative to a reference.

In everyday language, shifted can simply mean moved to a different place or time, or altered in emphasis or content.
