Shellfarming

Shellfarming refers to the aquaculture practice of cultivating bivalve mollusks, such as oysters, mussels, and clams, for their shells and meat. This form of aquaculture is distinct from finfish farming and focuses on species that filter feed from the water column. Shellfarming operations can take various forms, including bottom culture, where shellfish are planted directly on the seabed, or suspended culture, where they are grown in cages, bags, or on ropes suspended from rafts or longlines. The choice of method often depends on the species being farmed, local environmental conditions, and economic considerations.

The primary products of shellfarming are the edible meat of the mollusks and their shells. The meat is a source of food, while the shells have numerous applications. In modern times, crushed shells are utilized in landscaping as decorative mulch, in road construction as aggregate, and in agriculture as a soil conditioner to improve drainage and add calcium. The shells also provide essential calcium carbonate for other aquatic organisms and can be used in the production of lime and cement.

Bivalves are natural filter feeders, meaning they help to improve water quality by removing excess nutrients and suspended particles.
