In China, Shawan (沙湾) denotes a town in the Maowei Commune of Xuanwei County, Yunnan Province. The town is situated near the Lancang River and serves as a local hub for agriculture, particularly rice and tea cultivation. Historically, the area was inhabited by the Naxi people, and archaeological finds indicate a long continuity of settlement dating back to the Han dynasty. The contemporary economy is diversified with small-scale manufacturing and growing eco‑tourism based on the region’s natural scenery.

In Sudan, Shawan District () lies within the Eastern State, previously part of the larger El‑Gadarif State before administrative reorganization in the 21st century. The district capital, also named Shawan, is a crossroads for trade between Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, with a mixed population of Beja and Arab communities.
