Shapetypically

Shapetypically is a coined term used in discussions of shape analysis to describe the degree to which a given shape conforms to the typical or prototypical form of a class. Although not a standard term in established taxonomies, it is sometimes used to refer to a numerical score derived from comparing a shape to a representative prototype.

Definition: A shapetypically score measures the similarity between a shape and the class prototype, often after alignment in a common shape space. In practice, a typical workflow may include selecting a class prototype (the mean shape or a template), aligning contours via Procrustes analysis, and computing a distance metric such as Procrustes distance or a shape-space distance. Additional descriptors like elliptic Fourier descriptors or curvature distributions may be used to capture features.

Interpretation: Higher shapetypically indicates closer resemblance to the typical shape; lower indicates more deviation from the prototype. The concept is used to assess how representative a given instance is within a category.

Applications: Shapetypically concepts appear in pattern recognition, computer vision, biology (for comparing cell or organ shapes), anthropology, and archaeology, where typology and shape variation are of interest.

Limitations: The measure depends on sample composition, the chosen prototype, and the feature representation. It can be sensitive to noise, outliers, and the definition of the class boundary, and it is not a universal standard across disciplines.
