Shamakhi

Shamakhi, also known as Shamakhi and formerly as Shemakha, is the capital of the Shamakhi District in the southeastern part of Azerbaijan. The city lies in a valley of the Greater Caucasus at an elevation of approximately 350 meters above sea level. The surrounding landscape is characterized by gentle hills, agricultural fields, and the nearby rivers of Goychay and Khudafarin. The climate is moderate continental, with mild winters and warm, humid summers, a typical condition for the region.

The origins of Shamakhi date back to the 6th or 7th century, when it was a small settlement that became an important trading post along the Silk Road. It acquired prominence under the Khazar and later Persian influences before becoming an administrative center of the Shirvan Khanate in the 18th century. The city was repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes, the most destructive in 1822, which shifted its population to newer areas of modern Baku for many years. They later returned; Shamakhi has regained its role as a historical and cultural hub.

Its architectural heritage includes the Assumption Church, the 13th‑century Tomb of the Imams, and the ruins of the ancient fortress of Shamakhi, as well as several medieval khanates. The city hosts the Shamakhi Culture Centre, the main museum of the region, and regular music and folk‑art festivals that display traditional Azeri music, dance, and calligraphy. Agriculture remains a key economic activity, with citrus, grapes, and apples among the principal produce. Tourism is growing, due to the city’s blend of historic sites, natural scenery, and cultural events.
