Sextiles

A sextile is an astrological aspect formed when two planets are approximately 60 degrees apart along the ecliptic. It is generally regarded as a harmonious, opportunity-oriented aspect that favors cooperation and constructive interaction between the energies of the involved planets. The influence is usually milder than a trine but stronger than more challenging aspects such as a square or opposition.

The exactness of a sextile is determined by an orb, or allowable deviation from the exact 60-degree angle. Common orbs for a natal chart are about 4 degrees, with wider allowances (up to around 6–8 degrees) often used for slower-moving planets or modern interpretations.

In interpretation, a sextile suggests an easy flow of energy, potential for collaboration, and the ability to turn ideas into practical outcomes. It often indicates talents, resources, or opportunities that can be leveraged through communication, negotiation, or coordinated effort. However, because it is not an assertive aspect, opportunities may require initiative, timing, or the right circumstances to materialize.

Examples of meanings associated with specific planetary pairs include Mercury sextile Venus (smooth communication in relationships or creativity), or Mars sextile Jupiter (energized efforts that can expand through prudent action). Transit sextiles are often viewed as favorable windows for partnerships, learning, or starting projects.

Caveats include the overall chart context: a sextile’s positive potential can be tempered by other aspects or by sign and house placements that influence how easily the opportunity is recognized and utilized. As with all aspects, the natal chart’s structure colors the expression of a sextile.
