Service Host, commonly seen as svchost.exe, is a generic Windows process used to run one or more services that are implemented as dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). The design allows Windows to group related services into shared processes, reducing overall memory usage while providing a degree of isolation between service groups.

Multiple instances of svchost.exe run simultaneously. The Windows Service Control Manager launches each instance with a command line parameter that designates the set of services to load, often organized into groups such as netsvcs or LocalService. Each instance hosts only those services that share a DLL or functionality, enabling independent start, stop, or configuration of the groups.

Resource issues or misbehaving services within an svchost instance can cause high CPU or memory usage; the recommended approach is to identify the specific services using tools such as Task Manager or Process Explorer and restart or reconfigure them as needed.
