Sequencingteknikker refers to the methodologies employed to determine the precise order of nucleotides within a DNA or RNA molecule. Early sequencing methods, such as the Sanger sequencing (also known as chain-termination sequencing), were developed in the 1970s. The advent of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies revolutionized the field by enabling massively parallel sequencing. NGS platforms can generate millions or billions of sequence reads simultaneously, dramatically increasing throughput and reducing costs. Different NGS approaches exist, including sequencing by synthesis, ion semiconductor sequencing, and single-molecule real-time sequencing, each with its own advantages and applications.

More recently, third-generation sequencing technologies have emerged, such as long-read sequencing. These methods are capable of sequencing much longer DNA fragments, which can simplify genome assembly and improve the detection of structural variations.
