Sensoriyhdistämisessä, often translated as sensory integration, refers to the neurological process that organizes sensory information from within the body and from the environment, enabling us to use that information effectively to interact with the world. This complex process involves the brain receiving, processing, and responding to various sensory inputs such as sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, movement (vestibular sense), and body awareness (proprioception). When sensory integration functions smoothly, an individual can attend to relevant stimuli, filter out distractions, and perform everyday activities without conscious effort.

Difficulties with sensory integration, sometimes referred to as sensory processing disorder, can manifest in a variety of ways. Some individuals may be oversensitive to sensory input, finding certain lights, sounds, or textures overwhelming or aversive. Others may be undersensitive, appearing to have a low response to sensory stimuli and seeking out intense experiences. There can also be challenges with motor skills, balance, or coordination due to difficulties in processing vestibular and proprioceptive information. These challenges can impact learning, social interactions, and emotional regulation.

The concept of sensory integration was pioneered by occupational therapist A. Jean Ayres in the 1960s and 1970s. Occupational therapists often use sensory integration-based interventions to help individuals develop more adaptive responses to sensory input. These interventions typically involve providing structured sensory experiences in a playful and engaging manner to help the nervous system develop more organized patterns of response. The goal is to improve an individual's ability to process and respond to sensory information, thereby enhancing their participation in daily life.
