Sensoriojärjestelmät, also known as sensory systems, are biological systems that enable organisms to detect and process information from their environment. These systems are crucial for survival, allowing organisms to perceive stimuli such as light, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Each sensory system consists of specialized sensory receptors that are sensitive to particular types of energy or chemicals. These receptors convert the external stimulus into electrical signals, which are then transmitted to the central nervous system for interpretation.

The human sensory systems are well-defined. The visual system, for example, uses photoreceptors in the eyes to detect light. The auditory system employs hair cells in the ears to sense sound waves. The somatosensory system encompasses receptors for touch, temperature, pain, and pressure distributed throughout the skin and body. The gustatory system (taste) and olfactory system (smell) detect chemical compounds dissolved in saliva or airborne molecules, respectively.

These systems do not operate in isolation. The brain integrates information from multiple sensory modalities to create a coherent perception of the world. This multisensory integration allows for a richer and more accurate understanding of the environment, influencing behavior, cognition, and emotion. The study of sensory systems is fundamental to neuroscience, psychology, and biology, providing insights into how organisms interact with and navigate their surroundings. Disruptions or impairments in sensory systems can lead to significant challenges in an individual's life.
