Sensorillisuus is a term used to describe heightened sensory perception or sensitivity. It refers to an individual's experience of sensory input being more intense, vivid, or overwhelming than what is typically experienced by others. This can affect any of the five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. For example, someone with sensorillisuus might find bright lights or loud noises particularly jarring, textures unpleasant, or strong smells unbearable. Conversely, they might also experience heightened pleasure from certain sensory stimuli.

This phenomenon is not a medical diagnosis in itself but can be a characteristic associated with various conditions and developmental differences, such as autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, or ADHD. It can also be a temporary state due to factors like fatigue, stress, or certain medications. Individuals experiencing sensorillisuus may develop coping mechanisms to manage overwhelming sensory input, such as seeking quieter environments, avoiding certain textures, or using sensory aids like noise-canceling headphones. Understanding sensorillisuus is important for fostering empathy and creating environments that are more accommodating to diverse sensory experiences.
