SenecaCayuga

SenecaCayuga refers to the Seneca and Cayuga Nations, two of the six nations that comprise the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Historically, both the Seneca and Cayuga were significant members of this powerful alliance, often referred to as the Iroquois League by European colonists. Their traditional territories were located in what is now upstate New York. The Seneca Nation is the largest of the Six Nations, historically known as the "Keepers of the Western Door." The Cayuga Nation, also historically prominent, was situated between the Seneca and Onondaga territories.

The Seneca and Cayuga Nations share a common Iroquoian language family and a long history of political and social interaction, both as distinct entities and as integral parts of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Their governance structures, while unique to each nation, followed the broader Haudenosaunee model of clan systems and council leadership. Today, both nations continue to maintain their sovereignty and cultural heritage, with federally recognized governments and communities located in New York State. Issues of land rights, resource management, and cultural preservation remain central to their contemporary affairs. Their historical relationship within the Confederacy continues to shape their collective identity and their interactions with other nations and governments.
