Semestri

Semestri is a term used in several languages to denote semesters, the half-year periods into which many academic years are divided. The word is derived from Latin semestris and is commonly used in contexts where calendars divide the year into discrete teaching terms. In languages that use this form, semestri typically refer to one of the two main terms within an academic year, though some institutions use three-term calendars or additional summer sessions.

In most higher education systems employing a two-semester calendar, the academic year consists of a fall or autumn semester and a spring or winter semester. Each semester includes teaching weeks and an assessment period for examinations or coursework. The exact duration of a semester varies by country and institution, commonly ranging from about 14 to 18 weeks of instruction, followed by exams.

Credits: In Europe and many other regions, the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is used. A full academic year is typically worth 60 ECTS credits, or about 30 ECTS per semester, though programs may differ.

Variations: Some universities use a trimester or quarter system, with three or four sessions per year, while others offer summer terms that function as optional or overlapping semesters. The term semestri thus forms part of the calendar language of certain institutions rather than a universal standard.
