Semanticfeature is a term used in linguistic and computational contexts to describe a unit of meaning in semantic feature theory. In this framework, the meaning of a word or predicate is decomposed into a set of binary or scalar properties, or features, that together characterize its semantic profile. Features can be combined to explain relationships among words, such as synonymy, antonymy, selectional restrictions, and semantic roles.

In practice, a semantic feature contains properties that a word is either compatible with or incompatible with. For example, a typical feature set for a common animal term might include [+animate], [+animal], [+mammal], [+domesticated], and [+canine]. A human noun could share some features but differ on others, such as [+human] and [+animate], while a plant term would generally lack many of these animal features. Feature matrices enable linguistic analyses of word meaning, reference, and cross-linguistic variation.

History and usage: semantic features emerged from early structural and lexical semantics as a way to model meaning without relying solely on holistic descriptions. The approach influenced both theoretical linguistics and early natural language processing, informing lexicon design, semantic role assignment, and constraint-based grammars. In modern NLP, semantic features are less dominant than distributional and neural representations, but they remain relevant in rule-based systems, ontology development, and resources like lexical databases that require explicit feature tagging.

Limitations and current status: binary features can oversimplify nuanced meanings and struggle with context dependence. Many features are language-specific and hard to generalize. Nevertheless, semantic features continue to provide a transparent, interpretable account of lexical semantics and remain a useful tool in certain linguistic and computational applications.
