Selvrenende (self-healing) refers to materials and systems capable of autonomously repairing damage without human intervention. This concept draws inspiration from biological processes, where organisms can mend injuries or wounds. In materials science, self-healing polymers are a prominent example. These materials contain microcapsules filled with healing agents, such as monomers or catalysts, embedded within the matrix. When a crack forms, the capsules rupture, releasing the agents that react to reform the damaged area. This approach has been explored in coatings, adhesives, and structural composites, reducing maintenance costs and extending product lifespan. Research also extends to concrete, where bacteria or chemical additives can fill microcracks, preventing water infiltration and corrosion.

Beyond materials, self-healing systems are being developed in electronics and robotics. For instance, some conductive materials can reform broken circuits, while robotic skins may incorporate sensors and healing mechanisms to repair physical damage. In infrastructure, self-healing asphalt and pavement technologies use additives that seal cracks caused by traffic or weather, reducing road maintenance needs.

The advantages of self-healing technologies include increased efficiency, reduced environmental impact from fewer replacements, and improved safety. However, challenges remain, such as scalability, cost-effectiveness, and ensuring long-term reliability.
