Sellofaanin

Sellofaanin, also known as cellophane, is a transparent, regenerated cellulose film derived from wood pulp or cotton fibers. It was first developed in 1908 by Swiss chemist Jacques E. Brandenberger, who patented the process for its production. The name "cellophane" is a portmanteau of "cellulose" and "diaphane," the French word for transparent.

The manufacturing process involves treating cellulose with carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide to create a viscous solution called viscose. This solution is then extruded through a thin slit into an acid bath, where it regenerates into a solid film. The resulting cellophane is highly transparent, flexible, and possesses good barrier properties against grease, oil, and bacteria, making it ideal for food packaging.

Historically, cellophane was widely used for wrapping a variety of products, including cigarettes, sweets, and baked goods, before the advent of plastic films. Its ability to be heat-sealed and printed upon further contributed to its popularity. While its use has declined in some applications due to competition from petroleum-based plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene, cellophane remains relevant, particularly in niche markets where its biodegradability and specific barrier properties are advantageous. It is still employed for wrapping certain food items, florist bouquets, and in artisanal crafts.
