Self-petitioning is the act of filing a petition or application directly on one's own behalf with a government agency, court, or organization, rather than relying on another person to submit the petition for you. In U.S. immigration law, the term self-petition is most commonly associated with relief under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Eligible individuals, such as certain spouses, children, or parents of U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have experienced abuse, may file a self-petition with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to obtain lawful status independent of the abuser. The process typically involves submitting Form I-360 and supporting evidence, and, if approved, can lead to eligibility for permanent residence and work authorization. Processing times and specific requirements vary by case and law.

Outside immigration, self-petitioning may occur in other administrative contexts where a person submits a petition to assert rights, request benefits, or seek official recognition without a sponsor. In all cases, outcomes depend on statutory criteria, evidentiary standards, and agency discretion.
