Sektorite

Sektorite is a fictional mineral commonly used in science fiction and world-building contexts to describe a crystalline phase with sector-like zoning. The name suggests segmented, wedge-shaped regions within the crystal that create a banded or mosaic appearance.

In fictional descriptions, sektorite is portrayed as a dense, hard material with a metallic sheen. Colors range from gunmetal gray to iridescent hues. The crystal structure is variably defined across works, but sector boundaries are a recurring motif. Typical reported properties include Mohs hardness around 6–7, a high density of about 4.6–5.2 g/cm3, and imperfect to no cleavage with a conchoidal fracture. Some writers assign anisotropic electrical or thermal conductivity to sektorite, with certain sectors acting as conductive paths while others insulate.

Origin stories place sektorite in extreme geological settings, such as high-temperature hydrothermal veins, deep crustal plutons, or impact-related rocks. Crystallization is often described as proceeding with rapid cooling or exsolution, producing the characteristic sectoral zoning.

The term does not correspond to a real mineral in major reference databases and is used primarily for storytelling, game lore, and speculative science discussions. Etymologically, it is derived from the word sector, referencing the distinctive subdivision seen in its imagined crystals.
