Sekretoimisjärjestelmät, often translated as secretory systems, refer to the biological mechanisms and structures within an organism responsible for the production, storage, and release of substances such as hormones, enzymes, mucus, and other secretions. These systems are vital for a wide range of physiological functions, including communication, digestion, lubrication, and defense.

In multicellular organisms, secretory systems involve specialized cells or glands. Glands can be exocrine, releasing their secretions onto an epithelial surface or into a duct, or endocrine, releasing hormones directly into the bloodstream. Examples of exocrine glands include salivary glands, sweat glands, and mammary glands. Endocrine glands include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, and adrenal glands, which produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, and stress responses.

The process of secretion typically involves several steps: synthesis of the secretory product within cells, packaging into vesicles, transport of these vesicles to the cell membrane, and finally, fusion of the vesicles with the membrane to release their contents outside the cell or into a duct. This process can be regulated by various signals, such as hormones, nerve impulses, or changes in the internal environment.

Disruptions in secretory systems can lead to various diseases. For instance, insufficient insulin production by the pancreas leads to diabetes, while overproduction of thyroid hormones can cause hyperthyroidism. Understanding these systems is crucial for diagnosing and treating a multitude of medical conditions and for advancing fields like pharmacology and biotechnology.
